The Piggyback Table - Designed by Thomas Heatherwick
The Piggyback Table
Magis, an Italian designer furniture supplier, asked Thomas Heatherwick and his company ( Heatherwick Studio) to design an expanding table. But they wanted the table to be like no other table which you need to slide and pull out wings, or any other mechanism of doing so; they wanted it to come with the ability to divide into two separate table. Two tables which could be placed next to each other to make a larger/longer one.

The Heatherwick Studio then set out to create this masterpiece, but to make it with a twist, or a 'secret' if you will. They wanted to create a table which upon first glance looks like a normal, single piece table when the two parts are together, but surprises its users when separated. And I believe they have achieved just that with the Piggyback Table.
Heatherwick Studio designed the Piggyback so that the two tables sit on top of each other with a tight fit. They managed to do so by placing holes in the corners of the lower table, and the legs of the upper table simply slot in. Consequently there are no complex mechanisms you need to go through to unfold legs and such.
The two tables are the same size, the only difference is the legs ( in order for them to slot) and the table edging. The edge profiles are curved, allowing for an easy finger-hold to lift them off one another.
The Magis Piggyback Table is available at Papillon Interiors in a variety of different finishes. Click here to view the listing, or click here to go to our Contact Us page!
