Vitra Design Classics - Chairs

Over the years, Vitra have produced an absolute plethora of chairs. Chairs which range in sizes, shapes, colours, and fabrics; they simply do not hold back. Vitra source only the best of designers, such as Charles & Ray Eames, where their sense for creativity is unimpaired.

There have been so many great designs from Vitra, so to outline all of them will take far too long. What I will do is briefly outline a few of their classic designs.

Vitra Heart Cone

To get the ball rolling, [you simply give it a nudge...] I will start off with the Vitra Heart Cone Chair; the ultimate design classic. The wonderful Verner Panton's career peaked towards the end of the 1950's where Pop Art was on the rise, and he saw this. He took advantage of the situation by creating a range of chairs which were based on simple geometric shapes. He also kept in line with the aesthetics of Scandinavian Modernism with the bases.

The Heart Cone Chair was one of the most popular design from this range, where its name is taken from its appearance. The backrest can be interpreted in two different ways; reminiscent of Mickey Mouse ears, or a contemporary development of the classic wingback chair

Vitra La Chaise Chair

With innovation and creativity in mind, Charles & Ray Eames set out to create a lounge chair or a competition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. They took inspiration from the 'Floating Figure' sculpture created by Gaston Lachaise. La Chaise brings about a certain appeal, a cultured appeal some might say, to almost any room it gracefully sits in.

The appealing feature about La Chaise is that it allows for a wide range of sitting and reclining positions. It has also long since been established itself as an icon of organic design.

Vitra Coconut Chair

The coconut chair was designed by one of the most influential & important figures in American design. Who could it possibly be i hear you ask? The one and only George Nelson of course! If the 1950's design could be captured in a single element, the coconut chair would be it. This is simply because it is distinguished by its comical design and minimal use of materials.

George Nelson compared the armchair with a coconut cut into eight parts, with the colours reversed. By evoking the natural, spacious shape of a shell, Nelson created an inviting and comfortable armchair that allows the sitter to assume a wide variety of positions.

I have simply only outlined three of the classic designs from Vitra, but there are many more. Some of these other great design classics include the Eames Lounge Chair, The Amoebe, The Organic Chair, and more.
